Does Kalshi send a 1099?

Kalshi sends a 1099-INT and a 1099-MISC, but no 1099-B for your event-contract trades. What each Kalshi tax form covers and how to report your trades yourself.

The short version

  • Not for your trading. Kalshi doesn’t issue a 1099-B covering your event-contract trades.
  • You may get a 1099-INT for interest, a 1099-MISC for rewards, and a 1099-B or 1099-DA for crypto transfers.
  • Your trades are still taxable. You report them yourself from Kalshi’s transaction history.

The forms Kalshi does send

According to Kalshi’s help center, users who meet IRS reporting thresholds receive these forms:

FormWhat it coversWhere it goes
1099-INTInterest Kalshi paid on your balanceForm 1040 line 2b, plus Schedule B if your total interest is over $1,500
1099-MISCRewards, credits and promotionsUsually Schedule 1 line 8z, as other income
1099-BBroker transactions such as crypto transfers, not your YES/NO tradesForm 8949, as reported
1099-DADigital-asset transactions handled by Kalshi’s crypto partner, ZeroHashForm 8949, as reported

If no forms show up in your account, you probably didn’t cross the thresholds. Any income still has to be reported.

Why your trades aren’t on a 1099

For event contracts, Kalshi gives you a transaction history and a profit-and-loss statement instead of a 1099-B. That doesn’t make the profits tax-free. Kalshi is a US-regulated exchange with your tax ID on file, so assume the IRS knows about your account. Every position that closed or settled during the year is a gain or loss you report yourself.

How to report your Kalshi trades

  1. Download the yearly transaction CSV from your account’s Documents page on kalshi.com.
  2. Choose a treatment. Most traders use capital gains; Section 1256 and gambling treatment are the alternatives. See Kalshi taxes for how each one works.
  3. For capital gains, report each position on Form 8949 with box C (short-term) or box F (long-term) checked, then carry the totals to Schedule D.

Common questions

Why didn’t I get a 1099 from Kalshi?

Kalshi only issues its 1099-INT and 1099-MISC when you cross IRS reporting thresholds, and it doesn’t issue a 1099 for event-contract trades at all. You still report your trading gains and any interest or rewards.

Is Kalshi’s profit-and-loss statement enough to file?

It shows your totals, but Form 8949 needs the proceeds, cost basis and dates of each position, or an attached statement listing them. Kalshi’s transaction CSV has those details.

What’s the 1099-DA from ZeroHash?

It reports digital-asset transactions, such as funding your account with crypto. It doesn’t include your event-contract trades.

Will the IRS know about my Kalshi profits?

Kalshi is a US-regulated exchange with your tax ID on file. Report your trading whether or not you get a form; unreported income can lead to penalties and interest.
